چکیده

Background: One language-related area that has recently received more attention from researchers working in the field of stuttering is phonological working memory. This article aimed to identify phonological skills of working memory in children with stuttering in comparison with normal children, and to obtain the relationship between the increase in the number of syllables in nonwords and the mean percentage of error in non-word repetition in both groups, then to compare them with each other. Methods: Thirty children participated in the study, 15 children who stutter and 15 normal children which were matched by age, gender and socio-economic status. Cases of this study were recruited by non random convenience sampling. The research data collection was based on non-word repetition test. The test included 40 non-words. Independent t-tests and linear regression were used for data analysis. Results: Results revealed that in all cases the mean percentage of error was higher in children who stutter than normal children, but the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Also the mean percentage error did not show a regular increase by increasing the number of syllables in the non-words. So that, in both groups of the study the highest mean percentage of error was related to single-syllable non-words then three-syllable and two-syllable ones. Conclusion: The results of the present research from previous researches support the view that children with stuttering may have some degree of delay and slow in phonological working memory abilities when compared to normal children. It is proposed that in future more researches could be done in more samples, in different age groups of children and adults who stutter. 2014© The Authors. Published by JRSR. Recently working memory has been implicated in the development of stuttering. [6]. Working memory is universally recognized as neurocognitive system that provides temporary storage and processing of incoming information. Envisioned working memory as a multicomponent neurocognitive system includes a central executive, visuo-spatial sketchpad and phonological loop [7]. The phonological loop includes short term storage and rehearsal of incoming verbal information to enable comprehension. Phonological encoding during speech planning involves retrieving phonological material from storage to build articulatory plans [8]. Nonword repetition and phoneme elision in adults who do and do not stutter.

UNLABELLED The purpose of the present study was to explore the phonological working memory of adults who stutter through the use of a non-word repetition and a phoneme elision task. Participants were 14 adults who stutter (M=28 years) and 14 age/gender matched adults who do not stutter (M=28 years). For the non-word repetition task, the participants had to repeat a set of 12 non-words across fo...

Adaptation of the Syllable Repetition Task (SRT) and Determining its Validity and Reliability in 4-6 Persian Speaking Children

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the SRT that was performed in 4-6 year-old Persian-speaking children. The SRT is a nonword repetition task that assesses phonological working memory and was designed by Shriberg in 2008. Methods: The present research was a non-experimental study with a methodological design. The content validity of the task was evaluated...

Phonological encoding of young children who stutter.

PURPOSE Several empirical studies suggest that children who stutter, when compared to typically fluent peers, demonstrate relatively subtle, yet robust differences in phonological encoding. Phonological encoding can be measured through the use of tasks that reflect the underlying mechanisms of phonological processing, such as phonological awareness. This study investigated the phonological enco...

Nonword repetition and phoneme elision in adults who do and do not stutter: Vocal versus nonvocal performance differences.

PURPOSE The purpose of the present study was to enhance our understanding of phonological working memory in adults who stutter through the comparison of nonvocal versus vocal nonword repetition and phoneme elision task performance differences. METHOD For the vocal nonword repetition condition, participants repeated sets of 4- and 7-syllable nonwords (n=12 per set). For the nonvocal nonword re...

Relationships among linguistic processing speed, phonological working memory, and attention in children who stutter.

UNLABELLED Relatively recently, experimental studies of linguistic processing speed in children who stutter (CWS) have emerged, some of which suggest differences in performance among CWS compared to children who do not stutter (CWNS). What is not yet well understood is the extent to which underlying cognitive skills may impact performance on timed tasks of linguistic performance. The purpose of...
